Parkinson's Disease Overview

Parkinson's disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system, causing symptoms such as tremors, slowed movement, rigid muscles, impaired posture, and speech changes. While it can't be cured, medications and sometimes surgery can significantly improve symptoms.

Symptoms

Parkinson's disease symptoms can vary and may include:

  • Tremor, especially in hands or fingers.
  • Slowed movement and difficulty performing simple tasks.
  • Rigid muscles and limited range of motion.
  • Impaired posture and balance, leading to falls.
  • Loss of automatic movements like blinking or swinging arms while walking.
  • Speech changes, such as speaking softly or quickly, slurring, or hesitating.
  • Difficulty writing with small handwriting.

Causes

Parkinson's disease is caused by the breakdown or death of neurons in the brain, particularly those producing dopamine, a chemical messenger. The exact cause is unknown, but genetics and environmental triggers may play a role.

Complications

Parkinson's disease can lead to complications such as thinking difficulties, depression, swallowing and eating problems, sleep disorders, bladder issues, constipation, blood pressure changes, smell dysfunction, fatigue, pain, and sexual dysfunction.

Prevention

As the cause of Parkinson's is unknown, there are no proven ways to prevent the disease. However, regular aerobic exercise and the consumption of caffeine (found in coffee, tea, and cola) have been associated with a reduced risk of developing Parkinson's, though more research is needed.
